TRAILBLAZER Vol. 11, Article 9: “#YFARMERS”

In agriculture, we often hear how columnists or bloggers called the Filipino Farmers a Dying breed. With our Ageing farmers, conventional and traditional farming systems, and young generations opting for city life that in a long run may cause a shortage of farmers in the future. Facing these Agriculture pain points is a serious threat for the Philippines as we know that we are still primarily an Agriculture country.

As an Agri solutions provider, we fear for the future food security and for the farming industry sustainability. That is why in the year 2018 we started a campaign called the YFarmers: Philippine Youth Farmers with the mission to engage the younger generations in Agriculture. We know that the campaign will not solely resolve the pain points of agriculture, but we are aware that the main challenge here is how we can make agriculture more attractive for the younger generations.

For the campaign to be attractive for younger generations, we have launched one of today’s PBA Barangay Ginebra front men Scottie Thompson. As he exemplifies the characteristics of a #YFarmers, young and cool, passionate, risk-taker, innovative, professional-looking, and with an entrepreneurial mindset. Obviously, the main face of the campaign Mr. Scottie Thompson is not a farmer, as this is one of the objectives of the campaign to not have a focus on existing farmers, but rather focus on future farmers, the second-generation farmers, and the professional non-farming individual. And we are glad that this year Mr. Thompson is now officially a farmer as he is now starting a business engaged in the farming industry.

Aside from Scottie Thompson, to improve the agriculture image we have launched a program that aims to have a #YFarmers representative per Region. This is to create awareness for the younger generations that #YFarmers is not just a campaign, but a group of individuals showcasing the benefits of agriculture as a career, a business, and a profitable job.

Joining the YFarmers: Philippine Youth Farmers are:

1. Gerald Martinez – a full-time Farmer representing the Cagayan Valley Region

2. Jonathan Alonzo – a Farmer and managing a farm machinery leasing business representing the Cagayan Valley Region

3. Cliejferwen Maglasang – a Farmer, Farm consultant, and community development worker representing the Northern Mindanao Region
